Ignition Upgrade

I can use some insights on Merc Ignition upgrade...

Currently I am thinking of Magnecor Racing Wires along with colder plugs.

Before I purchase any of these... any info/insights/feedbacks will be appreciated! Thanks

I use the Magnacor KV8.5 spark plug wires as I just can't stand the stock MB wires.

I like the way the Magnacors fit very well and they come off and on much, much easier. The stock wires come apart when you take them off and just about weld to the spark plugs.

The Magnacor wires don't really add any Hp but I feel better knowing I have a top of the line wire and like the ease in maintenance.

I have always been a fan of magnecor. KV85 is what I am getting too. Furthermore, they are MUCH more affordable than the OEMs :)

i'm looking to get some bosch or oem from importec
but having hard time trying to find which engine i have, 12-011793 or 12-011794, i have no clue how to find out (prolly easy as hell though).:confused:

I'm sure you will need the 12-011793 coz all the ignition comes with the plug.

I cut open one end of my OEM wire... Long story short, I dont see why it is so expensive! :( Magnecor it is!

When you cut open the plug wire was it a solid wire or twisted strands?

With jeff help, I've contacted them about the wires and have ordered a set.

He has apps for V8 and non supercharged 4s but I forgot to write those numbers down.

Anyhoo, he said they are backed with work so he wont ship my set out till next week or so. When they arrive I will install them and write up about them

Prices vary depending on how many wires your car uses. But Magneco did say they will do a group buy for us. So if youre gonna swap your wires out might as well hold off a few weeks for a group buy, so more information will follow once i set up the GB :)

Hmm... I might be interested in this GB. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to upgrade.

Speaking of wiring. This MB mechanic was telling me that MB used some biodegradable wiring coating in some of the later model years. He then showed me some examples like a 97 C280 he was working on. I ’ll be darned if all throughout the engine compartment wiring harness you couldn’t see places where the wiring housing was cracked, and even broken off (mainly anywhere near heat) leaving exposed wires (yikes). So it did seem like it might be true.

Have any of you heard of this one?

Just some info here. I have posted on other forums that I replaced my plug wires with Magnecor and got some crap from professional tuners that the MB wires were better than the aftermarket wires because they were made with a thick solid copper core.

Well I cut open a wire tonight and there is no solid copper core wire. It's a bunch of twisted tinned copper wires. Cheap construction.

Magnecor wires are years ahead of the stock MB wires with regard to quality.

i'm just replaced my spark plugs as well as the suppressors, and the ignition wires, and all i can say is those stock wires have super glue on them rofl, new ones are so much easier to pull out and back in.
i went stock plugs Bosch Super F8 DC4

In choosing a spark plug you want a projected tip that gets the ignition point near the center of the combustion chamber.

The fine wire tips are nice if they will fire reliably. Some plugs seem to be more prone to misfires. I don't know why.

I like plugs with just one ground strap as opposed to the Bosch Plat 4 with 4 ground straps that get in the way of start of the combustion process.

Right now I have a set of NGK GP Plats in my motor. They are a fine wire tip with one groung strap. they were $2.50 each, or close. But they are not holding up real well. I mean the sharp edges of the tip are rounding off and the tip is eroding some.

The Champion Double Plats I ran in my C280 were a good plug with little to no drop in perfromance. The tip was not a fine wire type, but it was tapered and the plug had a single ground strap.

The Denso Iridium has a very fine wire tip and a nice single ground strap. The plug was in my C280 which lived at 3500-6000rpm. The Denso tip held up well and the performance seemed to be very reliable. I would like to buy some more for my C43, only the cost is holding me back. But I do think there is a slight improvement in engine response and maybe Hp.

The plug wire are nice, don't you think? You will really notice how easily they install and fit over the spark plug.

And when you want to remove them you can just pull lightly on the cap and they come off. Try that with the stock wires.

While this is an extremely old thread, I was wondering there is any other ignition upgrades that can be done for our cars aside from the 8.5 wires and some better plugs. Has anyone upgraded their ground wires to something like circle earth or what apexi offers? Would it worth investing in them?

when u go colder that means you have to gap it bigger? like a 4.43 to a 6?
