View Full Version : Transmission Leaking Fluid and Smoking

Hi There,

I have a '94 C280 that's leaking some transmission fluid, and it's landing on the exhaust pipe. It makes white smoke come up from the sides of the car when I'm at a stop light, especially on a warm day after driving on the freeway.

Ahwile ago I recall reading a thread that talked about a sensor or something that is really common for leaking like this, and just needs to have the o-ring replaced, and is like a 10 minute job. I searched for a couple hours through the forums and couldn't find it. Could you please point me to that thread, or remind me what the part is that's leaking?

that only applies to transmissions 97 & up which are electronically controlled. 94-96 is a totally different transmission which does not have that sensor. if you have a tranny leak i would have the tranny pan gasket checked. another possibility could be the tranny output shaft/tailshaft seal or the front pump seal. also check the seal rings for the tranny cooler lines.

Just take it to a independent mercedes shop and let then check on it. I don't think that you would be able to know what to replace.

While I appreciate your suggestion, I'd like to avoid the cost of taking it to a shop if at all possible, which is why I asked the question in the forums. :banana:

i wouldn't wait on this. if you see/smell tranny fluid you have a noticeable leak and by prolonging this, you are just asking for a transmission failure of some sort in the future.

lmfao i had this problem before....if you floored it it just blowed smoke in who evers face thats behind you....turned out to be the main shaft seal on the tranny.......its like a 20 dollar part with like 4hr labor

I remember you have to also pull the exhaust off to get to it
